Welcome to My Blog!
Imagine being a teenager trying to navigate the complex maze of adolescence. It's a challenging time, filled with rapid brain growth and hormonal shifts—and all your friends are experiencing it too! Therapy can be a powerful support during this transformative phase. Let’s explore how adolescent therapy works and how it differs from the therapy adults undergo.
How Teens Approach Therapy
Teens often find themselves in therapy not on their own initiative but through the concern of parents, teachers, or doctors. Unlike adults, who might seek therapy to tackle specific emotional or behavioral issues, teens may not initially know what they want from the therapeutic process. They are less likely to have specific goals in mind or to think about how their emotions, thoughts, and actions impact their challenges .
Starting With Rapport
Building a strong, genuine therapeutic relationship is crucial. Teens are exceptionally good at detecting discomfort or insincerity in adults. It’s essential for therapists to be non-judgmental, relaxed, and honest, showing a genuine interest in their teenage clients' worlds. Trying to dictate what teens should do often backfires.
Example: Putting Theory into Practice
In my sessions, I often delve into discussions about their interests—whether it’s their favorite TV show (I get good recommendations), music, or the social complexities of TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. Learning about the key figures in their lives—be they supportive, challenging, or humorous—helps in building open communication. It's a positive sign when teens can comfortably discuss these topics with me.
The Benefits of Therapy for Teens
Once a trust-based therapeutic relationship is established, therapy becomes a venue for teens to introspect about their feelings, view issues from different angles, and develop new coping skills. These skills foster self-awareness, emotional resilience, and self-esteem, empowering them to make better decisions for their future.
Examples: Putting Theory into Practice
Navigating Social Challenges: Consider a teen who feels hurt and upset after seeing friends without them in an Instagram post. Caught up in a spiral of negative thoughts, they might start to feel increasingly isolated. Another example is a teen receiving suboptimal feedback from a coach, which makes them lose faith in their abilities. Therapy can offer a space for compassion and perspective, helping them reframe these situations in a more constructive light.
Addressing Severe Challenges: Some challenges are severe—whether it’s grappling with an eating disorder, coping with the loss of a family member, or managing intense anxiety. In these cases, therapy becomes essential. It provides a safe space where teens can openly discuss their struggles and learn to adopt new viewpoints that pave the way for healing and resilience.
What Parents Need to Know
Managing Expectations
Many parents hope for a quick solution to their teen's problems—a professional who can finally help their teen adopt safer, healthier behaviors and feel better. It’s a common and understandable desire. However, therapy is a nonlinear process that often involves gradual progress and subtle shifts. It may not always produce the exact outcome one expects, but it can lead to profound change, helping teens develop resilience and a healthier perspective on their challenges.
The Power of Parents
Parents are pivotal agents of change. Despite what teens may make parents feel, they remain the most influential figures in their teen's life. Often, a teen’s behavior signals that something in their environment could be improved—whether it’s a need to feel more understood or a need for more structure and limits. Parents can significantly impact their teen's development by working on their own emotional responses and communication. As a therapist, I provide support to parents with a non-judgmental and empathetic approach, helping them to navigate these challenges effectively.
